Legal framework

Next steps for implementation

In order to introduce the front brake light as an important element to improve road safety, it will be necessary to amend or extend two parts of the legal framework for approval, namely:

  • Green must be approved as an LSF colour on motor vehicles
  • Brake signals must also be permitted at the front

In the medium term, these steps must be agreed at international level, at the level of the Vienna Treaty or the UN Economic Commission for Europe framework regulations.

The sensible and forward-looking way to achieve such an increase in safety for road users in the European Union as soon as possible seems to be to change EU legislation itself.

Accordingly, it would be desirable to make these changes as an extension of the EU specifics, within the framework of the relevant EU application provisions on the types of approvals for the EU area. Further progress would then be in line with the normal procedure under EU regulations and directives.

However, by introducing front brake lights on national territory and approving national exemptions - which is still possible outside of European regulations - any country interested in road safety can start this initiative immediately!
